Mission

Northgate Residents’ Ownership Corporation (NROC) and Resident Leadership

Northgate is a resident lead housing complex and residents significantly shape, direct, and influence: the quality of life at Northgate, the decisions about Northgate’s future, and the professional team responsible for managing Northgate.  Northgate’s vibrant neighborhood has a long history of community involvement.  Resident leaders have gathered groups that have done such things as; organize the buy-out of Northgate, made building rehabilitation decisions, review budgets, and create policies. 

 As a result of residents’ organizing efforts, Northgate Apartments are now owned by Northgate Resident Ownership Corporation (NROC).  NROC is governed by a Board of Directors which is made up of nine resident directors and four community directors.  Elections of resident board directors are held at the Annual Meeting of the NROC Membership and Board.  Residents do not earn equity from the corporation, but they do gain personal and professional experience while preserve affordable housing in the community.  Northgate’s resident lead model has been recognized all across communities in North America.

  NROC is made possible by our many partners; Northgate’s resident leaders, Maloney Properties, Champlain Housing Trust, HUD, City of Burlington’s Community and Economic Development Office, Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition, Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, Vermont Housing Finance Agency, and Vermont Housing and Conservation Board.
